National Valuation Director

Trey Stevens is the National Valuation Director for Venture First. He specializes in the valuation of business entities and business interests, the valuation of intangible assets and intellectual property, and the calculation of lost profits and commercial damages.

Mr. Stevens has performed the following types of valuation and economic analyses: business enterprise and fractional interest valuations, intangible asset and intellectual property valuations, goodwill impairment testing, restricted stock valuations, option and warrant valuations, professional practice valuations, reasonableness of compensation, litigation support, and the determination of lost profits and economic damages.

He has prepared these valuation and economic analyses for the following purposes: transaction pricing and structuring (merger, acquisition, liquidation, and divestiture), taxation planning and compliance (federal income, gift, and estate tax), financial reporting, dissenters’ rights proceedings, bankruptcy, fraudulent conveyance, marital dissolutions, probate proceedings, regulatory compliance, buy-sell agreements, strategic planning, financing securitization and collateralization, employee stock ownership plans, and litigation support and dispute resolution.

Mr. Stevens has valued the following types of business entities and securities: closely held corporations—entity value, closely held corporations—noncontrolling ownership interests, public corporations—restricted stock, complex capital structures (various classes of common/preferred stock, options, warrants), general and limited partnership interests, joint ventures, personal holding companies, proprietorships, professional services corporations, professional practices, and limited liability companies.

He has performed engagements in the following industries: advertising, agriculture, apparel, architecture and engineering, asset management, automobile dealerships, banking, biotechnology, broker/dealers, computer design and manufacturing, construction and contracting, consulting, consumer and specialty finance, cosmetics, credit union servicing organizations, defense, distribution, education, engine repair, fast food, fitness centers, food processing, food wholesale/distribution, government contracting, healthcare, grocery stores, hotel and hospitality, information technology, investment holding companies, livestock feed, lumberyards, manufacturing, marketing, medical training, metal fabrication, mining, recycling, pharmaceuticals, physician practices, plastics, printing, publishing, radio broadcasting, real estate development, real estate entities, restaurants, retailing, security systems and monitoring, shipbuilding, software consulting, software development, telecommunications, textiles, transportation and trucking, uniform supply, waste management, and wholesaling.

Mr. Stevens has provided expert witness testimony for deposition, arbitration, and trial. These litigations related to business valuation matters and economic damages matters. He has been retained as an expert witness in the following types of litigations: bankruptcy, breach of contract, dissenters’ rights, economic damages, marital dissolution, probate, trade secrets, and reasonableness of compensation.

Previous Experience
Prior to joining Venture First, Mr. Stevens was a founding member of Stevens & Greer, LC. Previously, Mr. Stevens was a principal of Willamette Management Associates and the director of the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Mr. Stevens began his valuation career with RSM McGladrey, Inc., where he worked his way up to become the practice leader of their Carolinas business valuation group and served as practice champion for the firm’s business valuation practice.

Professional Affiliations
Mr. Stevens is an accredited senior appraiser of the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) in business valuation. He was elected by the ASA business valuation members to a three-year term on the ASA Business Valuation Committee in 2009 and reelected to this position in 2012. From 2009-2015, Mr. Stevens served as vice-chair of the ASA International Board of Examiners. In this role, he was responsible for approving business valuation candidates for accreditation by the ASA. In 2017, Mr. Stevens was appointed to serve as chair of the ASA International Board of Examiners. He has been an author and instructor for the ASA Principles of Valuation courses and is currently a member of the ASA Business Valuation Education Subcommittee.
